These experts in Critical Care Medicine oversee airway
and ventilator management and coordinate the complete
medical care of critically ill patients. |

| Asthma-
The UCSF Asthma Center is
a multidisciplinary practice designed to provide highly-specialized
care to the patient with moderate-to-severe asthma. |
| Cystic
Fibrosis- At the
UCSF Adult Cystic Fibrosis Center, we provide comprehensive
evaluation as well as inpatient and outpatient care
for patients with cystic fibrosis. |

Interstitial Lung Disease Program -
The UCSF ILD Center of Excellence is a full-service consultative
practice specializing in the care of people with Interstitial Lung
Disease. Its mission is to provide assistance with the diagnosis of
interstitial diseases of the lungs, guidance to patients and providers
regarding the management of these diseases, and access to ongoing
clinical trials and research studies. |

Program at UCSF is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program for
patients with end-stage lung disease. |

Inpatient
Services- The faculty
of the Division provides 24 hour/day consultative services
for inpatients at SFGH. There is a focus of clinical
care and clinical research expertise in infectious disease,
pleural disease, interstitial lung disease and asthma.

Care- San Francisco
General Hospital is the designated trauma center of
Northern California, making its emergency and critical
care programs a high priority.

Tuberculosis
Clinic- The Tuberculosis
Clinic is operated by the City and County of San Francisco
and sees several thousand patients per year. The Clinic
has a long tradition of excellence and has trained many
physicians who are now in prominent positions in tuberculosis
control throughout the world.

AIDS
Chest Clinic- This
clinic specializes in the care of patients with HIV
and pulmonary disease. This unique clinic may be the
only one of its kind in the US.
|
Occupational & Environmental Medicine- The UCSF Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinic at SFGH provides multidisciplinary diagnostic evaluations of individuals with respiratory symptoms suspected to be due to occupational or environmental exposures.
|
High Risk Asthma Clinic- The High-Risk Asthma Clinic is designed to address the needs of those patients requiring hospitalization or intensive outpatient management of their disease. In addition to seeing a provider with an interest in asthma, patients can meet with a trained asthma educator.

Pulmonary Function Laboratory- The Adult Pulmonary Function Laboratory provides comprehensive physiologic testing for the patient with known or suspected pulmonary disease.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Clinical Activities

|
Inpatient Services - We provide 24-hours/day pulmonary
consultative services for hospitalized patients at the
Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Francisco.
|
Critical Care - Our Section directs the combined Medical/Surgical/Cardiac
Intensive Care Unit. Faculty members serve as attending
physicians on the Medical ICU and provide consultative
care for surgical and cardiac patients with respiratory
disorders.
|
Outpatient Services - We serve as a referral center for
VA outpatient clinics in all of Northern California.
The spectrum of respiratory problems evaluated includes
COPD, lung cancer, chronic cough, dyspnea, asthma, interstitial
lung diseases, pulmonary vascular disorders, and sleep
apnea. Referred patients are evaluated expeditiously
in these clinics, which meet 4 days/week, and followed
longitudinally when necessary.

Lung Cancer - Our center offers a multidisciplinary approach to lung cancer with review of cases at weekly meetings that include specialists in pulmonary medicine, thoracic radiology, oncology, and thoracic surgery. Diagnostic services include PET/CT scanning, low-dose CT screening, thoracentesis and bronchoscopy, including endobronchial ultrasound for diagnosis and staging of thoracic malignancies.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center Campus

Severe COPD - For patients with advanced COPD, available specialized services include pulmonary rehabilitation and referral for lung volume reduction surgery.
|
Sleep Apnea - Patients with sleep apnea are evaluated as appropriate with home studies or with on-site, attended video polysomnography, with the option of sleep staging by EEG, limb movement monitoring, and split-night CPAP/BiPAP and oxygen titration. Our service provides treatments including CPAP/biPAP, home ventilation, and referral for assisted weight loss programs, dental appliances, and for palatal or bariatric surgery.

Neuromuscular and Musculoskeletal Disease - For patients with respiratory failure from muscular weakness as from ALS or from advanced restrictive lung disease from scoliosis, we work with other services to provide home ventilator services and follow up.
|
Pulmonary Function Lab - This laboratory provides comprehensive physiologic testing, including conventional measurements of airflow, lung capacity, respiratory muscle strength, walk tests with oximetry, altitude simulation for patients with known or suspected lung diseases, and arterial blood gas measurements.
