PULMONARY & CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE
CRITICAL CARE

OVERVIEW

Faculty from the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine direct the Medical Intensive Care Unit (5E/5R) at San Francisco General Hospital. These experts in Critical Care Medicine are the attendings of record for all patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, and are responsible for their overall care. Medical residents rotating through the ICU participate in a structured curriculum developed by faculty from both the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit. This curriculum includes lectures/workshops on airway management, ventilator strategies, hemodynamics, burns, nutrition, trauma, sedation, head injury, and central venous catheter placement. Faculty enroll patients regularly in studies sponsored by the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Clinical Network.

The pulmonary fellow during Critical Care training rotates through the Surgical/Trauma ICU (4E), acting as the ICU fellow on call. This ICU specializes in the care of a wide variety of traumatic, complicated surgical, neurologic, and neurosurgical disorders of adults and children.
