Dr. Davis attended Ensworth School and Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University (A.B., 1995) with a concentration in African Colonial History. After college, he taught English with Princeton-in-Asia in Hong Kong, and attended Vanderbilt University Medical School (M.D., 2000). From 2000 to 2003, he did internal medicine residency on the Thayer Firm of the Osler Medical Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After working at the Kijabe Medical Center in Kenya, he began fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UCSF in 2004. In 2008, he completed a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research at UCSF, and joined the faculty of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital. Dr. Davis is a member of the Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center and the UCSF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute K Scholars Program.

Research Interests

My research focuses on improving the diagnosis and management of pulmonary disease in low- and middle-income countries, and is based in Kampala, Uganda, East Africa. There, along with Ugandan colleagues at Mulago Hospital, Makerere University, the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Programme, and the MU-UCSF Research Collaboration (www.muucsf.org), we are focused on developing and testing new strategies for diagnosing and monitoring HIV-infected patients with tuberculosis (TB). Ongoing studies in a variety of settings are evaluating the diagnostic accuracy, clinical effectiveness, and/or public health impact of novel applications of smear microscopy, culture, nucleic acid testing, and T-cell-based interferon-gamma-release assays for TB diagnosis and management. Future studies will explore how advances in TB diagnostics can be broadly and effectively implemented in high-incidence settings, using a variety of research approaches, including systematic reviews, mathematical modeling, cost-effectiveness analysis, and qualitative methods.
