Dr. Fair is Assistant Adjunct Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital and a faculty member of Global Health Sciences of UCSF. Dr. Fair received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University in Anthropology and African Studies, her Masters in Public Health from Columbia University School of Public Health, and her PhD in Epidemiology from Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Fair’s expertise is in infectious disease epidemiology with a focus on tuberculosis, public health, and African studies. She spent two years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a public health fellow working in vaccine-preventable diseases with the National Immunization Program and one year with the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee focusing on gender and tuberculosis studies. In addition to Bangladesh, her previous international experience includes working in Kenya, Tanzania, Eritrea, and Ireland. Since 2005 she has conducted clinical and operations research on tuberculosis under the guidance of her mentor, Dr. Philip Hopewell.

Research Interests

Dr. Fair’s current research focuses on the molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis in San Francisco and intensified tuberculosis case finding in high burden settings. With Dr. Hopewell she is currently working on developing new policy guidelines for tuberculosis contact investigation in low resource settings for the World Health Organization and is working with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Program in Tanzania developing a study to evaluate the yield and cost-effectiveness of tuberculosis contact investigation in Dar es Salaam. Also in Tanzania she is helping set up and build capacity for a national reference hospital for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. Since 2006 Dr. Fair has been working on implementing and evaluating newly developed and broadly endorsed International Standards for Tuberculosis Care, working closely with National Tuberculosis Programs in India, Indonesia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Mexico.
