Dr. Freemer received her B.A.
at Williams College in 1990 before her M.D., internship, residency,
and chief residency at the University of Rochester, in New York.
She moved to San Francisco in 1999 where she completed her Pulmonary
and Critical Care Medicine fellowship at UCSF. She joins the faculty
this year, being an active member of the Interstitial Lung Disease
Clinic. In addition, she is the Director of the UCSF Center of
Excellence in Interstitial Lung Disease, coordinating clinical
research activities at all UCSF sites.
Research Interests:
Dr. Freemers research interest is in Interstitial Lung Disease
(ILD). Within the Center of Excellence in ILD, she takes primary
responsibility for clinical and translational research in ILD
at UCSF including management of the ILD database.
As a clinical researcher, Dr. Freemers focus is on the association
of rheumatologic disease and ILD. Through close collaboration
with UCSF rheumatologists, she has begun working with two patient
cohorts, the UCSF Lupus Genetics Project and Rheumatoid Arthritis
Project. In the lupus cohort, she is studying the genetic risk
factors for pneumonia, the most common pulmonary manifestation
of the disease. In addition, in both the lupus and RA patients,
she is investigating the association of smoking and disease severity.
Furthermore, in these populations she will assess the importance
of gene-environment interactions, examining the interplay between
the environmental exposure to tobacco smoke and the genes that
regulate the metabolism of tobacco smoke.
