Dr. Kato-Maeda received her M.D. degree from Universidad La Salle, Mexico City, Mexico, in 1990 and trained in internal medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición "Salvador Zubirán", Mexico City, Department of Medicine. She received a master’s degree in Medical  Sciences at the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición "Salvador Zubirán" and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, Mexico City. She was the Subdirector of the National Tuberculosis Control Program in Mexico from 1997 to 1998. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis at Stanford University with Dr. Peter Small in 2000. From 2002 to 2005, she worked with Dr. Small as senior research assistant in the Stanford Center for Tuberculosis Research. She joined UCSF as a research specialist in 2005 and became Assistant Adjunct Professor in May 2008.

Research Interests

Dr. Kato-Maeda’s research activities focus on the epidemiological aspects of tuberculosis. During her postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University she worked with Dr. Peter Small, a leading expert in the study of the molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis. In February of 2005, Dr. Kato-Maeda together with Dr. Philip Hopewell opened the tuberculosis research laboratory at UCSF, currently located in building 100, room 109 at the SFGH. Her research interests are the molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis and the impact of the genetic polymorphism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the clinical presentation and epidemiology of the disease.  She has collaborations with the San Francisco Department of Public Health Division of Tuberculosis, CDC and other academic Institutions in United States and abroad including Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Panama.

Dr. Kato-Maeda participates in teaching activities related to the molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis as well as research management involving laboratory components. She also facilitates laboratory meetings for the tuberculosis research community at SFGH/UCSF. Dr. Kato-Maeda also serves as a consultant for laboratory aspects of the Tuberculosis Control Program, as well as a consultant to numerous research projects related to tuberculosis.
