Mark R. Looney, MD is Assistant Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Attending Physician on the Pulmonary Consultation Service and the Intensive Care Units at UCSF.  He received his undergraduate degree from Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee and his medical degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis. He then came to UCSF where he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.  Since 2003, he has conducted research in the Cardiovascular Research Institute in the laboratory of his mentor, Michael A. Matthay, MD.

Research Interests

I have directed my clinical interest in acute lung injury into a research program investigating the mechanisms responsible for pulmonary insufficiency secondary to hemotherapy.  I have developed a mouse model of transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), replicating many features of the human condition, which I am using to dissect the cellular and molecular pathways that lead to lung injury. Clinically, I am prospectively enrolling patients in an observational cohort study of TRALI in conjunction with the UCSF TRALI SCCOR grant.
