Dr. Zimmerman received her M.D. degree from Brown University in 1984. After internal medicine training at Northwestern University in Chicago, she completed her Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at Boston University. She joined the faculty at UCSF in 1990, became Associate Professor in 1997, and Professor of Clinical Medicine in 2003. She is the Director of the ICU and of the Bronchoscopy Service at the San Francisco Veterans Hospital and attends in the ICU, on the Pulmonary Consult Service and in the outpatient chest clinic.

Dr. Zimmerman's primary academic interest is in Medical Education. She is a Harvard-Macy Scholar and the Co-Director of 3 of the 8 required courses for first and second year medical students: "Major Organs", "Metabolism and Nutrition", and "Integration and Consolidation Cases". She is a member of the Academy of Medical Educators and sits on several educational committees for this function. She is a panel chair for the UCSF Medical School Admissions Office. She was awarded the Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003. She holds the Gold Headed Cane Endowed Teaching Chair.
